Caregiver-infant interactions in humans Flashcards
What it reciprocity?
Meaning two-way
Two individuals (parent-infant) responding to each other’s signals
What is interactional synchrony?
Temporal co-ordination of micro-level social behaviour (mirror actions and emotions) timing and patterns within reactions
What was Meltzoff and Moore’s observation?
Babies as young as 42 minutes. Babies reciprocated gestures/emotions the adults made. Identified by independent observers
What does Isabella et al say about interactional synchrony
Assessed degree of synchrony of 30 mothers and infants and mother-infant attachment quality. high synchrony=better quality attachment.
what does isabella et al say about the importance of reciprocity?
Observed mother-infant interactions at 3 and 9 months and then at 12 months assessed the quality of their attachment using strange situations.
- Good interaction synchrony
- Minimal involved and excessive involved results in insecure attachment
What is the distinction between reciprocity and interactional synchrony?
Reciprocity is just turn taking. Interactional synchronicity is richer and broader concept and is about being in tune with each other so is actually more about emotion than behaviours
What is an issue with the reliability of Meltzoff and Moore’s study.
Koepke et al have failed to replicate the Meltzoff and Moore study - there was no clear association in the behaviours.
What is a positive of care giver infant interactions?
Most research is conducted in controlled environments so they are filmed from multiple angles and ensures the footage can be rewatched.
Inter-rater reliability is as high as 0.92
Research into caregiver-infant interactions has said to be socially sensitive
What is an issue with overstimulating mothers?
Can lead to insecure attachment - an overstimulating mother shows that reciprocity in and of itself is not necessarily a positive thing
