caregiver - infant interactions Flashcards
reciprocity?
- reciprocal means two way
- infant and caregiver responding to each others signals, eliciting responses from each other
an example of reciprocity?
smiling
a baby smiles and causes the caregiver to smile, starting interaction
why is reciprocity important to an infant?
- influences physical, social and cognitive development
- shapes babies perception of the world and how they will form future relationships
interactional synchrony?
- when two people interact and tend to mirror facial and body movements
- co-ordinate actions like a conversation
What did Heinmann show about infants that demonstrate a lot of imitation from birth?
- more likely to have a better quality relationship with caregivers at 3 months
Meltzoff and Moore (M+M)
- controlled observation
- showed 4 different stimuli and observed infant response through video tapes
- judged by people who didn’t know what the infants had seen
why are there some problems when testing infant behaviour?
- not very reliable - infants mouths are constantly in motion which makes it hard to distinguish between intended expressions and coincidence
What did Jean Piaget suggest about infant responses?
- behaviour was not intentional, the infant would interact as they are usually rewarded by the caregiver responding.
attachment deifinition?
emotional bond, two way process leading to certain behaviours; proximity seeking and clinging, protection of the infant
