Caregiver- Infant Interactions Flashcards
Define attachment
A 2 way emotional bond that Individual feel is necessary for their emotional security
Why are caregiver infant interactions important
Good quality interactions are associated with successful development of attachment between baby and caregiver
What are the 2 elements of caregiver infant interactions
Interactional synchrony
Reciprocity
What are the 2 elements of reciprocity
Alert phase
Active phase
What is reciprocity
When the baby and caregiver give and elicit responses from each other
Like turntaking
What is the alert phase
Feldman- baby signals they want an interaction
2/3 of the time the baby is picked up
By 3 moths interaction increases and mother and baby pay attention to facial features
What is the active phase
Babies have more of an active role. Take turns in initiating the reaction
Brazelton et al - like a couples dance
What is interactional synchrony
Feldman- a temporary coordination of micro level social behaviour
Describe mezeltoff and moores interactional synchrony study
- showed babies as young as 2 weeks mirrored actions of mother
-babies shown one of three features. Babies were more likely to repeat expression than change would say
Describe isabellas study for interactional synchrony
30 babies and mothers observed
Found those with higher interactional synchrony had measured better quality attachments
What is a strength of caregiver infant interactions
Filmed in the lab
Can be analysed later and by many people so good inter rater reliability
Distractions minimised
Babies don’t know they’re filmed like in over observations so more validity and reliability
What are the limitations to caregiver infant interactions
Difficult to interpret babies behaviour
Observing behaviour doesn’t tell us the developmental importance - unsure if reciprocity and interactional synchrony are essential for development
