Animal Studies Flashcards
What did lorenz study
Imprinting and sexual imprinting
What was lorenz procedure
Divided a clutch of goose eggs
Half hatched with mother half hatched with him
What were lorenz findings
Whoever the ducks first saw at birth they imprinted on and followed them
What is sexual imprinting
When the animal the bird imprints on shows courtship behaviour to that species later on in life
What is a strength of lorenz research
Supporting evidence
Regolin found chicks followed the first moving shape they saw even when showed lots
What is a limitation to lorenz research
Generalising the study to humans. Humans are more complex than birds so shouldn’t be linked
What did Harlow observe
Newborns kept alone in a bare cage often died but usually survived if they had something soft to cuddle
What was the procedure of Harlows research
Had two model mothers
One wire one cloth
Both dispensed milk
Had a toy scare the monkey in the cage to see what happened
What were the findings of harlows research
Baby’s sought the cloth mother for comfort
Didn’t matter which one had food
Shows contact comfort is more important than food
What did Harlow find about maternally deprived monkeys in adulthood
- wire mother monkeys most dysfunctional
- cloth mothers didn’t develop properly either
- mated less
- if they became mothers they neglected or killed their children
What did Harlow find out about the critical period for monkeys
Had to be within 90 days or the damage was irreversible
What is a strength of Harlow
Real world application - important of attachment in zoos etc and for helped social workers understand bonding experience
What is a limitation of Harlow
Human brain and behaviour is more complex than monkeys so may not be appropriate to generalise behaviour
However more similiar than lorenz birds
