What are the Commando Values?
Excellence - we’re elite fighters, but we can never become complacent. We always strive to do better and be better.
Humility - We respect the rights, beliefs, and contributions of everyone. We openly seek to learn from others.
Integrity - When we’re deployed in gruelling conditions, integrity keeps us safe, true to our purpose and powerfully aligned.
Self-discipline - Taking responsibility for individual actions makes the collective even stronger.
Why are the Commando Values so important?
No matter where we operate or what we do our values keep us true to purpose.
Outline phase 1 of RMIOT.
Individual skills lasting 10 weeks
- focuses on militarisation and developing individual skills
- Introduction to persdonal administration, weapons handling, Initial Military Fitness (IMF), military values and standards, and RM history.
- Ex FIRST STOP = You learn to apply skills in field. + navigation, firelcraft, tactics and enhanced weapon handlining continues throughout weeks
- Ex TENDERFOOT and Ex LOST TRIBE = cement same fundamental skills,
- Ex EYE OPENER = YOs assessed on basic fieldcraft. If successful graduate to Section Skills phase and earn green belt.
Outline phase 2 of RMIOT
Section Skills phase lasting 10 weeks
- teaches YOs the principles of small team tactics
- Continue to built proficiing in weapon handling, fieldcraft, navigation and Advanced Military Fitness (AMF)
- Introduced delivering orders
- Ex SOFTLY = YOs pit wits against a live enemy inside a tactcal scenario (retain info and report back)
- Ex LONG NIGHT = YO must pass Section Command appointment.
- Ex SANDSTRIKE is final exercise teaching mechanics and principles of small team offensive + large formations
Outline Phase 3 of RMIOT.
Troop skills lasting 8 weeks
- YOs learn to live, work and fight as a troop of 30 individuals.
- Throughout Ex HASTY ATTACK, Ex JAGGED EDGE and Ex DRAGON STORM, YOs will be assessed on abilities to plan, lead and execute
- academic journey continues by completing Strategic studies and physical with Bottom Field Pass Out.
- Success = Cap Comforter.
Outline Phase 4 of RMIOT
The Commando Phase lasting 7 weeks
- teachers commanders how to lead complex raids, sabotage mission and vertical assaults
- practice ground, sea and helicopter manoeuvre
- work with other nations and/or Navy and Army.
- Ends with Ex CRASH ACTION: demanding course where YOs tested on mental and physical limits
- To conclude they take part in commando tests: Endurance Course, 9-mile Speed March, Tarzan Assualt Course, and the 30 Miler.
- If successful they’re awarded the Green Beret and earn title of Royal Marines Commando.

What is important to remember as an leader?

Role as a manager?
A Manager is someone who arranges and uses rescources in order to achieve a companies or organisations goal.
What are the roles of RM?
Royal Marines operate from RN shops and aircraft in various enviornments all over the world
They’re used to be deployed in all forms on conflict and also for humanitarian support e.g. 43 Commando provide constant protection to UK’s nuclear deterent.
Responsibilities of junior ranks in RM?
Fully trained specialists in their field, focusing on specific taks
responsible for lower-level tactical action fulfilling the intent of Troop of Team Commanders
Additionally support Troop Sergeant in management and discipline
Responsibilities of Senior Ranks?
Promote into senior ranks based on skill, experience and time served
Teach and observe junior ranks
Responsible for administration and discipline of the Team/Troop and ensuring the highest standards of operational effectiveness
Also important in the development of Junior Officers to provide advice and guidance.
Roles of RM Officers?
Leadership and management responsibilities immediately after training
Large breadth of tasks which they are responsible for. Need to manage the whole department including divisional care of team and development of subordinates
Need to plan ahead while considering the command aim and liaise with other departments
Work closely with NCOs to get specialist advice to make informed decisions
Role of RM band service?
important role as public face of the RN and RM
Help contribute to the UK’s Defence Diplomacy Strategy by performing at military, ceremonial and social events.
Also provide vital medical and logistical function
Roles of RM reserves?
Part time RM but fully trained Commandos
Support specialist units within nuclear and maritime security + provide specialist military and civilian skills to Commando Force and wider Defence
Can be deployed globally.
What is integral to being an RM Officer?
‘Lead by example’
i.e. never ask a commando to do something you wouldn’t do yourself.

Outline Phase 5 of RMIOT.
Modern Operations lasting 25 weeks
- YOs deploy to America to train alongside the USMC on Ex VIRGINIA TEMPEST
- They learn the art of Close Quarter Combat on Ex OPEN DOOR and how to facilitate public order on Ex STEADFAST WARRIOR
- In final preparation for joining the CF they receive study on personnel management, report writing and receive briefs on the deployments that await them
- Ex FINAL NAIL is the final exercise in the syllabus where YOs are tested to validate their impending role as Troop Commanders inside the CF
- Finish with Pass Out Parade

- Protect the UK , its Crown Dependencies, and its Overseas Territories.

What is the role of the Royal Navy?
Trade and Freedom: We operate across the globe to support the free flow of essential trade to our island nation, build vital relationships with allies and maintain a watchful eye over anyone who poses a threat

The role of a Royal Marine Officer?
- You’ll encounter everything, from the hottest deserts to the freezing Arctic.
- You’ll lead deployments wherever your team is needed, including humanitarian aid missions and responding to global conflicts in some of the most hostile environments imaginable.
- You’ll command a team of elite amphibious fighters across any terrain – on land, sea, and air – and see more of the world than most see in a lifetime.

- 47 Comando (Raiding Group) - provide land craft, amphibious assault and training
- 539 Raiding Squadron = use landing craft and amphibious vehicles to deliver RM to land
- Commando Eginners = support 3 Commando Brigade
- Commando Logistic Regiment
- Viking Squadron (part of logistics) = 3 Commando Brigade’s experts in Protected Mobility
Outline the RN capabilities.
Two aircraft carries - HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales (flagship assets)
Nuclear Submarines:
The RN operates four Vanguard-class submarines, armed with Trident nuclear missiles, forming the UK’s continuous at-sea deterrent (CASD). Dreadnought class will replace Vanguard
Also fields Astute-class attack submarines for multi-role missions.
Destroyers & Frigates:
Type 45 destroyers (Daring class) specialize in air defense.
Type 23 frigates (Duke class) are focused on anti-submarine warfare.
Future Type 26 & Type 31 frigates are being developed.
Amphibious & Support Vessels: Includes Albion-class landing platform docks, supply ships, and mine countermeasure vessels.
Where does the RN operate?
North Atlantic, Middle East (Gulf), Mediterranean, Carribean, South Atlantic and Antartica and finally Indo-Asia-Pacific.
What exercises is the RN currently on and what do they plan?
