Cardiovascular System & Haemodynamics Flashcards
What is the function of the heart?
Pump blood around the body
How many Chambers does the heart have
4
The 4 chambers of the heart work side by side as?
two pumps
right side pumps de-oxygenated blood into the lungs
left side pumps oxygen rich blood into the body
What is the function of blood?
- Deliver oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells
- Transport waste products away from those same cells
The three types of blood vessels?
- Arteries: carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the rest of the body
- Veins: carry de-oxygenated blood to the heart
- Capillaries: small blood vessels attached to organs
What is the function of arteries?
Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the rest of the body
What is the function of veins?
Carry deoxygenated & waste rich blood away from the tissues of the body back to the heart and lungs
What is hypertension?
High blood pressure
What are the symptoms of hypertension?
None really
Usually discovered in routine checkups
What is hypotension?
Low blood pressure
What are the symptoms of hypotension?
Lightheadedness
Dizziness
Fainting
Seizures
Name 5 ways yoga practices benefit the cardiovascular system?
- Strong vinyasa increases cardiac and respiratory function by strengthening the cardiac muscle.
- Restorative vinyasa rebalances HBP via the PNS
- Vinyasa sequencing (krama) increases sweat and cardiac output thereby cleansing the blood, skin and lungs
- Muscle movement also increases circulation & detoxifes the blood
- Forward bends massage the kidneys preventing renal arterie stenosis (RAS)
What yoga practices are contraindicated for hypertension?
Inversions
Strong twists (intra abdominal pressure)
Keep arms at shoulder height or below
Kapalabhati and Bhastrika
What yoga practices are therapeutic for hypertension?
Restorative poses & yin yoga
Pranayama stimulating the PNS (nadi shodhana & full yogic breath)
Yoga Nidra & Meditation
What yoga practices are contraindicated for hypotension?
Fast transitions (forward folds to standing)
Inversions if excessively low
