Cardiovascular System Blood Components and Blood Flow Flashcards
Blood Flow Step 1
From the right atrium, oxygen-poor blood from all tissues except the lungs flows through the tricuspid valve to the right ventricle
Blood Flow Step 2
Right ventricle pumps oxygen-poor blood through the pulmonary semilunar valve, into the pulmonary artery, which carries it to the lungs
Blood Flow Step 3
Left atrium receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs through the pulmonary veins, blood flows out of the LA, through the mitral valve and into the left ventricle
Blood Flow Step 4
Left ventricle receives oxygen-rich blood from the left atrium, blood flows out of the LV through the aortic semilunar valve and into the aorta, which carries it to all parts of the body, except the lungs
Blood Flow Step 5
Oxygen-poor blood is returned by the venae cavae to the right atrium and the cycle continues
Plasma
contains nutrients, hormones, and waste products
Erythrocytes
red blood cells produced by red bone marrow
Leukocytes
white blood cells that protect the body against harmful invaders
Neutrophils
formed in the red blood cells fight infection by engulfing and swallowing germs
Basophils
formed in the red bone marrow, promote the inflammatory response
Eosinophils
formed in the red bone marrow, increase response to allergic reactions
Lymphocytes
formed in the red bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen, protect body against disease
Thrombocytes
also known as platelets, importance in the clotting of blood
Atherosclerosis
hardening and narrowing or the arteries due to a buildup of cholesterol
