cardiovascular system Flashcards
explain the cardiac cycle of the heart using the following key terms:
- Atrial systole
- Ventricular systole
- Diastole
atria go through diastole where they fill up with blood, there is passive filling of the ventricles during this stage, then atrial systole happens where the atrial walls contract, tricuspid valves open and blood is pushed into the ventricles during atrial systole, blood fills up in the ventricles and the ventricle walls contract pushing the blood through the semilunar valves up the septum
how does neural control of breathing increase tidal volume
baroreceptors detect lung stretch. this tells the inspiratory control centre to increase TV. phrenic nerve is stimulated to cause the diaphragm to contract and flatten more. intercostal nerve is stimulates external intercostals to contract more stronger and pull the ribs up and out more. sternocleidomastoid, scalenes and pec minor recruited to do this more
