Cardiovascular system Flashcards
lumen
space within a tubular part or organ, such as the space
within a blood vessel
tunica
a layer in the wall of a blood vessel or other tubular structure (ex: tunica externa, tunica media, tunica intima)
artery
largest type of blood vessel; carries blood away from the
heart to all parts of the body; thick walls/small lumen; high
pressure
capillary
smallest blood vessel; thin walls allow substances to diffuse into or out of the blood
vein
Thin-walled blood vessel that carries blood back to the
heart. Larger lumen and lower pressure compared to arteries.
systematic circulation
pathway of circulation between the heart and the rest of the body except the lungs
pulmonary circulation
flow of blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs and back to the left side of the heart
atrium
Each of the two upper chambers of the heart that receives blood that comes into the heart
ventricle
Each of the two lower chambers of the heart that pumps blood out of the heart
hemostasis
stoppage of blood flow
platelets
thrombocytes; cell fragments in the blood that are essential for blood clotting
Fibrinogen/Fibrin
Inactive/active forms of protein that help to interlock and hold platelet plug at site of blood vessel injury
cardiac muscle
Muscle of the heart that is branched, striated, single nucleated
myocardium
middle, thick, muscular layer of the heart wall
electrocardiogram
a record of the electrical activity of the myocardium
