Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Backflow
if a valve doesn’t close tightly blood leaks back into the chambers
Stroke volume
Volume of blood pumped from left ventricle per beat
Cardiac output equation
Heart Rate x stroke volume
Cardiac output
Amount of blood pumped out of the heart per minute
Systole
heart muscle contracts & pumps blood out from chambers into arteries
Diastole
When heart muscle relaxes and allows chambers to fill with blood
Cardiac cycle
Performance of human heart from beginning of one heartbeat to the next
Recovery rate
Time it takes for heart beat to return to resting after sport
Vasoconstriction
Narrowing the diameter of arteries to decrease blood flow
Vasodilation
Widening the diameter of the arteries to increase blood flow
Veins function
Return deoxygenated blood from organs back to heart
Arteries function
Carry blood away from heart
Capillaries function
Exchange of materials between blood and tissue cells
Veins link between structure & function
Thin structure for carrying low blood pressure
Arteries link between structure & function
Blood under high pressure so have thick walls
Capillaries link between structure & function
One cell thick walls to allow diffusion of substances in & out of blood stream
What is VSM
Vascular shunting mechanism - redistribution of blood due to the demands of exercise
What is VCC
Vasomotor Control Centre - control VSM, regulates blood flow
Plasma function
Dissolve nutrients, provides to organs
Red blood cell function
Takes haemoglobin which carries oxygen from lungs to body’s tissues
White blood cell function
Produce antibodies, fight off infection in the body
Platelets
Prevent bleeding by forming clots
Immediate effects of exercise
Heart rate & stroke volume increases, breathing rate increases, body temp increases
Bradycardia
abnormally slow heart rate that is less than 60 beats per minute
Precapillary sphincter
control of blood flow to the tissues, located at arterial end of a capillary
Pathway of blood through the heart
Vena cava, right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary artery to lungs, pulmonary vein back into left atrium, left ventricle, aorta
Average cardiac output
5L
Semilunar valve
Prevents backflow during systole
