Cardiovascular Disease Flashcards
Hypertension, Heart Failure, Stroke, CAD, Atheriosclerosis
Preventable forms of cardiovascular disease
The progressive narrowing of the coronary arteries causing a decreased blood supply to the myocardium
Coronary arteries: arties that feed the heart with blood
Myocardium: Heart muscle
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
: the progressive narrowing of the arteries
Becomes CAD when the arteries that are being narrowed are responsible for nourishing the heart
atheroosclerosis
decreases the blood supply to the heart to the extent of not being able to meet the oxygen demands of the muscle
causes chest pain
ischemia
is ischemia is not corrected the deprived cells begin to die causing a
heart attack
Smoking and other tobacco use, Hypertension, Abnormal blood lipids or high cholesterol, Physical inactivity, Obesity and overweight, Diabetes
Risk Factors
Concentrated energy source of fats that are stored in the body (in the blood or in adipose tissue)
triglycerides
Proteins that carry the lipids in the blood•Should e less than 200
Lipoproteins(Cholesterol)
should be greater than 60
HDL (High Density Lipoproteins)
Should be less than 130
LDL (Low density lipoproteins)
a dominant risk factor for CAD
VLDL (Very low density lipoprotein)
medical term for high blood pressure
normal 120/80
hypertension
greater than 140 and/or greater than 90 diastolic pressure
hypertension numbers
Heredity–Increasing age–Sodium sensitivity–Excessive alcohol consumption–Tobacco use–Obesity and overweight–Diabetes–Physical inactivity–Oral contraceptives–pregnancy–stress
Risk factors for hypertension
Caused by blood clot and atherosclerotic damage or fatty deposits that break away into the blood and atherosclerotic damageIn any of these cases, blood supply to the brain is disrupted causing cellular death
stroke
