Cardiotocography Flashcards
What does a CTG stand for?
Cardiotocography
What does a CTG do?
Records pressure changes in the uterus using internal or external pressure transducers
Normal foetal heart rate
100 - 160 bpm
Baseline foetal bradycardia
< 100 bpm
Causes of baseline foetal bradycardia
Increased foetal vagal tone
Maternal beta blocker use
Baseline foetal tachycardia
> 160 bpm
Causes of baseline foetal tachycardia
Maternal pyrexia
Chorioamnionitis
Hypoxia
Prematurity
What is early deceleration on a CTG?
Deceleration of a heart rate which commences with the onset of a contraction and returns to normal on the completion of the contraction
Causes of early deceleration on a CTG
Usually an innocuous feature and indicates head compression
What is a late deceleration on CTG?
Deceleration of the heart rate which lags the onset of a contraction and does not return to normal until after 30 seconds following the end of the contraction
Causes of late deceleration on a CTG
Foetal distress e.g. asphyxia or placental insufficiency
What are variable decelerations?
Independent of contractions
What may variable decelerations indicate?
Cord compression
