Cardio vascular diseases Flashcards
what is coronary heart disease
- plaque builds up in the coronary arteries where oxygen rich blood is supplied to your heart muscle.
- when plaque builds up in the arteries, this is called atherosclerosis.
- narrowing of arteries lead to angina and heart attacks
what is a stroke
serious life treating condition where blood supply to part of the brain is cut off
- blockage of arteries supplying the brain
what is atherosclerosis
potentially serious condition where arteries become blocked with fatty substances called plaques or atheroma.
- the plaques cause the arteries to harden and narrow restricting blood flow and oxygen to vital organs
- can cause blood clots which could stop blood to the heart or brain
- no symptoms at first but could cause heart attacks or strokes
- thickening or hardening of artery wall due to fatty deposits
what is arteriosclerosis
thickening or hardening of artery wall due to fatty deposits
- this causes a decrease in elasticity of arteries
what is angina
reoccurring chest pains resulting from lack of blood supply to the heart
- usually a symptom of a heart attack
