Cardio-respiratory System Flashcards
Respiratory surfaces must be kept moist, so animals have to either:
Remain in moist areas, or have covered or fully internal structures
Are insect trachea ventilated continuously? And why?
No, valves open and close according to requirement, to minimise water loss
What is the name of the respiratory pump in frogs?
Buccopharyngeal pump
How come elephants can breath so far underwater?
Dense connective tissue to protect the alveoli, stop them from bursting from pressure difference
Do bird lungs have alveoli?
No - vascularised tubes called parabronchi
Do bird lung air sacs have a role in air diffusion?
No
How do bird lungs ventilate?
Air comes into posterior air sacs, across lung, into anterior air sacs and then out. Aerodynamic valves stop flow the wrong way
What kind of blood flow do birds use?
Cross current, perpendicular to flow of air
