Systole
The ‘working’ phase of the cardiac cycle
Diastole
The ‘resting’ phase of the cardiac cycle

Defibrillator
A device that shocks the heart with an electrical current
Arteries
Blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart. Is more muscular and elastic than other blood vessels.
Capillaries
Blood vessels with thin walls that allow oxygen and nutrients to pass into the cells.
Veins
Blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Thinner and less muscular than arteries.
Blood
Called a tissue because it contains many kinds of cells/transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, metabolic and waste products, heat, and hormones/made of plasma.
Plasma
90% water, composes the blood
Erythrocytes
Red Blood Cells (RBCs)
Leukocytes
White Blood Cells (WBCs)
Thrombocytes
AKA Platelets, important for blood clotting.
Myocardial Infarction
(MI) Heart attack
Hypertension
(HTN) High Blood Pressure
