Cardiac tamponade Flashcards
1
Q
Cardiac tamponade?
A
Features:
- dyspnoea
- raised JVP, with an absent Y descent - this is due to the limited right ventricular filling
- tachycardia
- hypotension
- muffled heart sounds
- pulsus paradoxus
- Kussmaul’s sign (much debate about this)
- ECG: electrical alternans

Q
Cardiac tamponade?
A
JVP: Absent Y descent
Pulsus paradoxus: Present
Kussmaul’s sign: Rare
3
Q
Constrictive Pericarditis?
A
JVP: X + Y present
Pulsus paradoxus: Absent
Kussmaul’s: Present
Characteristic features: Pericardial calcification on CXR

Q
A commonly used mnemonic to remember the absent Y descent in cardiac tamponade is TAMponade = TAMpaX
