Cardiac Medications Flashcards
Class for Intropin (Dopamine)
Positive inotrope
Action of dopamine
Increase contractility
Uses of dopamine
*CHF
Shock
Side effects of dopamine
- Increased HR
- Increased myocardial oxygen needs resulting in angina and arrhythmias
Class of dobutamine (Dobutrex)
Positive inotrope
Action of dobutamine (Dobutrex)
- Stimulates beta1 receptors (and weakly stimulates beta2 receptors) causing vasodilation
- Reduces pulmonary interstitial edema
Side effects of dobutamine
- Increased HR
- Increased myocardial oxygen needs, resulting in angina and arrhythmias
- Decreased BP
Suffix for ACE inhibitors
-pril
What does angiotensin converting enzyme do?
Causes vasoconstriction and water retention
Action of ACE inhibitors
- Decrease Afterload by *preventing vasoconstriction
- Decrease preload by *preventing sodium and water retention
- Decrease mortality and CHF by decreasing left ventricular remodeling
Uses of ACE inhibitors
HTN
*MI
*CHF
Side effects of ACE inhibitors
*hypotension
*hyperkalemia
*persistent cough (if so, will be put on ARBs)
Suffix of ARBs
-sartan
Action of ARBs
Inhibits angiotensin II, thus reducing BP, development or progression of ventricular hypertrophy
Uses of ARBs
HTN
*MI (but only if ACE inhibitors can’t be used)
Not really used for CHF unless aces cant be used)
*Side effects of ARBs
*Hypotension
Suffix for beta blockers
-lol
Uses of beta blockers
Angina
MI (indefinitely)
Tachyarrhythmias
CHF (only stable heart failure, not used for acute exacerbation)
Side effects of beta blockers
*Hypotension
*AV block
Bradycardia
Class for nesiritide (Natrecor)
*Natriuretic peptides
Uses for nesiritide (Natrecor)
*CHF
*Vasodilators to be used during a hypertensive crisis
Nitroglycerin
Nitroprusside
Uses of vasodilators
Angina
MI
HTN
*CHF
Shock
List vasodilators
Hydralazine (Apresoline)
Isosorbide dinitrate (Isordil)
Nitroglycerin
Nitroprusside
