Cardiac dynamics during exercise Flashcards
During exercise the muscle’s demand for oxygen increases what does this mean?
The heart has to pump harder/faster for the increase in oxygen and decrease in lactic acid and CO2
How does the heart rate increase during exercise?
Linearly to the exercise intensity.
How do you calculate maximum heart rate?
220-Age of patient.
Describe sub-maximal exercise in terms of oxygen consumption.
Oxygen supplied = oxygen needed. Sub-maximal exercise should be comfortable to do.
Prior to exercise does the heart rate increase?
Yes. This is called an anticipatory rise. It is the heart’s preparation for exercise.
Why is the heart rate still raised after completion of exercise?
To rid the body of harmful toxins such as lactic acid and CO2.
What is SV response to exercise?
SV increases linearly with exercise intensity
The decreased heart rate of elite athletes during exercise assists them in what way?
The increase in heart rate means that the ventricles have longer to fill up with blood in the diastolic phase. This means that there is an increase in stroke volume. more blood is able to get to the working muscles
Stroke volume is able to increase during exercise for two reason. What are they?
An increase in venous return and Starling’s law
Why is there an increase of venous return during exercise?
Increased use of the muscle pump.
What is the cardiac output’s response to exercise?
It increases linearly with the intensity of exercise until it plateaus.
