Card 17 - Feldstein, Cultural Deprivation Flashcards
Give one criticism of Feinstein.
(“Working class parents had a large lack of interest in the education of their child meaning they under-achieve as parents are not involved and do not develop their child with educational toys & activities.”)
The underachievement may be due to parents not being able to be interested in their child’s education as they lack the necessary funds to provide the child with education toys and activities, meaning material deprivation is the cause.
What does Feinstein argue about working class parenting in relation to cultural deprivation?
Working class parents had a large lack of interest in the education of their child meaning they under-achieve as parents are not involved and do not develop their child with educational toys & activities.
What does Hyman argue about the working class subculture in relation to cultural deprivation?
Hyman argues the values and the beliefs of working class culture are a “self imposed barrier” to success. They adopt a fatalistic view & see place no value in things such as a high status job.
