Carcinoid Syndrome Flashcards
1
Q
Definition of carcinoid syndrome?
A
Constellation of symptoms caused by systemic release of humoral factors from carcinoid tumours
2
Q
What humoral factors are commonly secreted by carcinoid tumours?
A
Serotonin
HIstamine
Tachykinins
Prostaglandins
3
Q
Common sites for carcinoid tumours?
A
Appendix
Rectum
4
Q
Presentation of carcinoid syndrome?
A
Paroxysmal flushing Diarrhoea Cramping abdominal pain Wheeze Sweating Palpitations (think about what the humoral factors released will cause e.g. tachykinins causing palpitations/tachycardia)
5
Q
Investigations appropriate in suspected carcinoid syndrome?
A
24 hour urine collection (looking for elevated 5-HIAA levels = serotonin metabolite)
CT/MRI to localise tumour
Worth looking for underlying MEN if additional endocrine symptoms present (systemic malignant symptoms likely to already be present)
