Carboxylic acid Flashcards
Total method of prep of carboxylic acid
6
1) from primary alcohol and aldehyde
2) from alkyl benzene
3) from nitrile and amide
4) From gringnard reagent
5) From acyl halide and anhydride
6) from ester
Prep of carboxylic acid from primary alcohol and aldehyde
For primary alcohol-strong oxidizing reagent
For aldehyde-mild oxidizing reagent
Prep of carboxylic acid From alkyl benzene
By vigorous oxidation of alkyl benzene aromatic carboxylic acid can be formed
Reagent-KMnO4-KOH
To give intermediate of benzene attached to COOK and then hydrolysis to give benzoic acid (benzene attached to COOH)
Prep of carboxylic acid From nitrile and amides
R-CN (H+ or OH-) give amide which again in presence of H+ or OH- give RCOOH + NH3
Prep of carboxylic acid from gringnard reagent
Gringnard reagent+CO2 in presence of DE give salt of carboxylic acid which with H3O+ give RCOOH
Prep of carboxylic acid from acyl halide and anhydride
RCOCl with H2O give RCOOH+Cl-
and with OH- Or H20 give RCOO- +Cl-
RCOO +H3O+ GIVE RCOOH
Prep of carboxylic acid from ester
Acidic hydrolysis of ester directly give carboxylic acid while basic hydrolysis give carboxylate which on acidification give corresponding carboxylic acid
(Note along with carboxylic acid alcohol will also be formed of less chain)
