Carboxylic acid Flashcards
organic chem
what is carboxylic acid ?
Carboxylic acid has general formula of CnH2n+1COOH
with a functional group of
-COOH
they undergo similar chemical reactions eg>
combustion, all typical acid reaction and esterfication and they are soluble in water
describe esterification?
carboxylic acid reacts with reversibly with alcholo ; when heated with under reflex heat in a water bath ,cataylsed by sulfuric acid to form ester and water (condensation reaction)
note:ester are insolube in water
Physical properties of Esters?
1) low boiling point hence volatile
2)sweet-smelling(hence as articial food flavorings)
3)insolube in water
4)soluble in organic water
5)less dense than water so float
6) Physcial properties
what are isomers?
they have same chemical formula but different physical proterties
draw isomer of pentene:
Describe the similarity of cond3sqtion and adfition polymerization
Describe the 3 difference between addition and condensation polymerization
- Addition polymers have a monoer with only one functional group(c=c) whereas condensation reaction has more than one monoer of different functional group og -cooh,-oh
- Additon reaction does not form water as by-product but condensation reaction forms water as by-product
- Addition reaction monomers have only one carbon-carbon double bond whereas condensation reaction can have more than one carbon-carbon double bond
