alcohols Flashcards
organic chem
what are alcohols?
They have the same general formula of CnH2n+1OH
and have the functional group of -OH
they undergo chemcial reactions like combustion, oxidation and esterification
alcohols can be produced from
the fermentation of gulcose and they are solube in water
how to test for alcohol?
Add potassium maganate (vii) it chnages from purple to colourless
or
add potssium dichromate(VI) K2Cr2O7 it changes from organe to green (reducing agent)
example:
Butanol + KMnO4—–>
propanol + K2Cr2O7
alcohol oxidation test?
alcohol is oxidised by oxygen gas in the atmospheric air,via am enzyme-catalysed reaction in bacteria
enthanol +o2—> ethaonic acid +h20
or
alcohol is oxidised in other oxidsing agent
- reaction mixture in place ina round-botton flask fixed to a condenser, then heated under reflux in a water bath (to prevent alcohol from escaping due to its low boiling point hence high volatility.
describe the production ethanol?
it is via fermentation of glucose
which involves
mixing of sgar, water ,yeast at opt temp of 37 temp in the absence of O2 to obtain ethanol
the yeast respires ananerobically and the enzymes of yeast catalyst breakdown glucose into ethanol and C02
C6H12O6 —>2CO2 +2C2H5OH
what is esterfication?
