Carbonates Flashcards
What is Limestone Formula?
Calcium Carbonate ( CaCo3)
What is Lime Formula?
Calcium Oxide ( CaO )
What is Calcium Hydroxide? ( Ca(OH)2 )
Slaked Slime
What is Calcium Hydroxide? ( Ca(OH)2)
LimeWater
How is lime made?
Calcium carbonate decomposes when heated to form calcium oxide and carbon dioxide
CaCo3 (+heat) = CaO + Co2
How is Slaked Lime made?
By adding water to calcium oxide
Ca(OH)2 (s) = Ca(OH)2 (aq)
How is Limewater made?
Adding water to Slaked lime to make a solution
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 = CaCO3
How is Limestone made?
Adding CO2 gas to LimeWater
CaCO3 = CaO + CO2
What are the uses of CaCO3?
Limestone can be used to:
- Manufacture iron and steel
- Manufacture Cement
- Neutralise excess acidity in lakes and soil
What are the uses of CaO?
Lime can be used to:
- Neutralise soil acidity
- Neutralise acidic industrial waste products ( Removes sulfuric acid )
- Remove acidic impurities in the basic oxygen furnace
What are the uses of Ca(OH)2?
Slaked Lime can be used to:
- Neutralise soil acidity
- Neutralise acidic industrial waste products ( Removes sulfuric acid )
- Glass manufacture
Carbon dioxide is produced when dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with?
Copper(II) Carbonate
