Carbonate, Bicarbonate Flashcards
Properties of CO2
Acidic, Released with Brisk effervescence, colourless, odourless, gaseous oxide
Identification of CO2
Lime water test
at first, white turbidity = CaCO3
excess of CO2, water soluble = Ca(HCO3)2
Is lime water test possible for SO2?
Yes
CaSO3 = white
Ca(HSO3)2 = soluble
What is lime water?
Ca(OH)2
What can be used in place of lime water?
Ba(OH)2 = Baryta water
Why does carbonate form ppt with CaCl2 and turbidity with Ca(OH)2
In CaCl2, Ca2+ is more, ppt more
In Ca(OH)2, Ca2+ conc is less, ppt less = tubidity
