carbon dioxide and methane Flashcards
what is the enhanced greenhouse effect
-the sun emits short-wave infrared radiation which passes through the layer of greenhouse gases and reaches the earth. The earth re-emits these rays and trap the heat energy preventing it from escaping back into space, In recent times, this greenhouse layer has become thicker and thus more heat is trapped increasng world temepratures, causing global warming and thus climate change
formation of carbon dioxide
- as a product of complete combustion of carbon-containing substances
- as a product of respiration
- as a product of the reaction between an acid and a carbonate
- from the thermal decomposition of a carbonate
sources of methane
- decomposition of vegetation
- waste gases from digestive processes in animals
- bacterial action on rice and paddy fields
carbon cycle
removal of CO2
- photosynthesis in plants: plants use carbon dioxide and water along with light energy trapped by chlorophyll to produce glucose and oxygen gas
addition of CO2:
-respiration: chemical reactions in cells that may or may not use oxygen to release energy and also carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
-combustion: when carbon-containing fossil fuels are burnt in the presence of oxygen, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Combustion is basically the burning of fossil fuels
what is the carbon cycle
a continuous cycle of these compounds (methane and carbon dioxide)
