Carbohydrates and lipids Definitions Flashcards
Proton
a positively charged particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom
Electron
a negatively charged particle that orbits around the nucleus of an atom
Neutron
a particle with no charge that is found in the nucleus of an atom
Monomers
the smaller units from which larger molecules are made
Polymers
large macromolecules composed of smaller repeating subunits(i.e. monomers) via condensation reactions
Polysaccharides
carbohydrate polymers comprised of many(i.e. hundreds to thousands) monosaccharides
Monosaccharide
a sugar that cannot be broken down into simple sugar
Glycosidic bond
a covalent chemical bond that joins a carbohydrate(sugar) molecule to another group(which may be another carbohydrate or not)
Oligosaccharide
a carbohydrate that is composed of 2-10 monosaccharides
Glycoproteins
molecules consisting of carbohydrate chains attached to a membrane protein
Glycolipids
molecules consisting of carbohydrate chains attached to a lipid molecule
Antigen
a unique molecule present on the surface of a cell that induces an immune response
Single bond
a chemical bond where one pair of electrons is shared between two atoms
Double bond
a chemical bond where two pairs of electrons are shared between two atoms
Saturated
referring to compounds in which all carbon-carbon bonds are single bonds
