Carbohydrates Flashcards
Where do carbohydrates come from?
Most carbohydrates come from plant products
What is glucose?
Glucose is a carbohydrate made by plants. It ends up in vegetable leaves and roots, fruits, nuts and grains
What are the three types of carbohydrate?
1.Sugars-Basic carbohydrate
2.Starches-Complex carbohydrate
3.Dietary fibre-Complex carbohydrate
What are simple carbohydrates?
Simple carbohydrates (sugars) can provide a lot of energy for immediate use, but contain no other useful nutrients
What are complex carbohydrates?
Complex carbohydrates (starches) are good sources of energy. The body can easily store energy from carbohydrates for rapid use by the muscles, so they are particularly important for athletes
What are non-starch polysaccharides (fibre)?
Fibre is found in grains and cereals and most fruit and vegetables. Fibre absorbs large amounts of water in the bowels, and this makes stools softer and easier to move through the intestines
