Carbohydrates Flashcards
Formation of carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are formed in plant by a process known as photosynthesis.
Carbon dioxide is absorbed from the air through the leaves.
Water is absorbed from the soil through the roots.
Energy is absorbed from sunlight by chlorophyll (green pigment).
This energy is used to create glucose from carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).
Oxygen is released into the air.
Equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water + energy == glucose + oxygen
6Co2 + 6H2O + Sunlight == C6H12O6 + 6O2
Elemental composition of carbohydrates
C - Carbon
H - Hydrogen
O - Oxygen
Classification of Carbohydrates

Monosaccharides
Monosaccharides are simple sugar units.
They’re the basic units of all carbohydrates.

Disaccharides
Disaccharides are formed when two monosaccharides join together with the elimination of water (condensation reaction)
