What are the elements of carbohydrates
Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen
What are all carbohydrates made up of
One or more single sugar units
How do we classify carbohydrates
Sugars. Starches. Fibre.
What are the sources of carbohydrates
Sugar: cake, biscuit, jam, honey, sugar and soft drinks
Starch: potatoes, cereals, bread and pasta
Fibre: fruit, vegetables and whole cereals
What are 3 functions of carbohydrates
Carbohydrates supply the body with heat and energy
The fibre prevents diseases e.g. cancer of the bowel
Extra carbohydrates is stored as fat ( adipose tissue ) which insulates the body and prevents heat loss
What is cellulose?
Cellulose also known as dietary fibre is not digested by the body
It helps prevent constipation and diseases
It is important for it aid’s digestion by helping to push the food through the intestines
It stimulates peristalsis, the contraction and relaxation of the muscles of the intestine
The role of sugar in carbohydrates
Many of these foods provide empty calories
Too much sugar leads to tooth decay and obesity
Other names for sugar are glucose, sucrose and maltose
Name 3 ways to reduce sugar in the diet
Read food labels to make sure there are no hidden sugars
Drink water in substitute for fizzy drinks
Replace sugary snacks with healthier choices e.g. fruits and nuts
What are empty calories ?
It means that they contain sugar only and are locking in all other nutrients
