Carbohydrate Metabolism Flashcards
What accumulates with a GALK deficiency?
Galactitol
Another name for GALK deficiency
Galactosemia Type II
Clinical feature of GALK deficiency, and can it be reversed?
Infantile cataracts, and it can be reversed
GALT deficiency accumulates what?
Galactitol and galactose/GAL-1-P
GALT Deficiency clinical symptoms (CLASSIC)
- Cataracts
- Liver enlargement
- Avoid lactose
- Sepsis (E. Coli)
- Speech Appraxia
- ID/DD
- Color (jaundice)
Others: Gonadal dysfunction and growth delay
What is the most common form of galactosemia?
Duarte Variant
What is a limitation to the GALT deficiency Partial transferase deficiency?
Can be missed on the NBS depending on assay
GALE Deficiency affects what?
Prevents formation of glucose-1-phosphate
GALE deficiency (3 types)
Generalized
Peripheral
Intermediate
Generalized GALE enzyme activity
Enzyme activity low in all tissues
Peripheral GALE enzyme activity
Enzyme activity low in RBCs and WBCs only
Intermediate GALE enzyme activity
Enzyme activity low in RBCs and WBCs, and <50% of normal other tissues
GALE clinical features
Generalized: most severe, with hypotonia, poor feeding, vomiting, weight loss, jaundive, hepatomegaly, caratacts.
Peripheral: generally asymptomatic
Intermediate: Intermediate symptoms
Fructose metabolism: key enzyme
Aldolase
Fructokinase deficiency: Clinical features
Clinically benign
