Carb Counting Flashcards
What are the four common meal-planning methods? Briefly describe each
The Food Pyramid - By the USDA to promote healthy food choices with exercise (for entire family)
The Plate Method - 1/4 starch, 1/4 meats, 1/2 vegetables, fruits and low fat milk (for low literate people)
Exchange Lists for Diabetes - foods are grouped together in similar nutrient content and serving size can be exchanged (basic reading and math skills)
Carbohydrate Counting - mostly for diabetes patients (1 CHO choice = 15g CHO)
What are the three main types of carbohydrates?
Sugars, starches, and fiber
A palmful of meat =
A thumb length of cheese =
A handful of vegetables =
A fistful of fluid =
A palmful of meat = 3oz

A fistful of fluid = 8oz
What is glycemic index?
Measures acute postprandial glucose response to a carbohydrate-containing food
Is there an effect on carbohydrate intake when taking in fiber?
Yes, you can subtract from CHO if > 5g of fiber
What is the conventional way of carb counting? Intensive?
Conventional - fixed amount of CHO evenly distributed throughout the day
Intensive - intake may vary throughout the day
