Car Components Flashcards
What is the function of the engine in a car?
The engine converts fuel into mechanical energy that powers the car’s movement through combustion.
What is the role of a transmission?
The transmission controls the power from the engine and adjusts it to the wheels, allowing the car to switch gears and control speed efficiently.
What does the radiator do?
The radiator helps cool the engine by circulating coolant and removing excess heat, preventing overheating.
What is the purpose of spark plugs?
Spark plugs create the spark needed to ignite the fuel-air mixture inside the engine’s combustion chamber.
What are pistons, and how do they work?
Pistons are cylindrical components inside the engine that move up and down, converting the explosion from fuel combustion into mechanical force.
What is a carburetor?
A carburetor mixes air and fuel in the proper ratio before it enters the engine’s combustion chamber. (Note: Most modern cars now use fuel injectors instead of carburetors.)
How does a fuel injector work?
A fuel injector sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber, allowing precise control of the air-fuel mixture for efficient combustion.
What is the function of the alternator?
The alternator generates electricity to recharge the car’s battery and power the electrical systems while the engine is running.
What is the purpose of the exhaust system?
The exhaust system removes waste gases produced during combustion and helps reduce noise and harmful emissions.
What is the difference between a manual and automatic transmission?
A manual transmission requires the driver to change gears manually using a clutch, while an automatic transmission shifts gears automatically based on the car’s speed.
What does the differential do?
The differential transfers power from the transmission to the wheels and allows them to rotate at different speeds, especially when turning.
What is a catalytic converter?
A catalytic converter reduces harmful emissions from the exhaust by converting toxic gases into less harmful substances.
What is power steering?
Power steering uses hydraulic or electric power to make steering easier, allowing the driver to turn the wheel with less effort.
What is ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)?
ABS prevents the wheels from locking up during hard braking, allowing the driver to maintain control and steer the car.
What are shock absorbers?
Shock absorbers help dampen the movement of the car’s suspension, providing a smoother ride by reducing bouncing over rough roads.
