CANS! Flashcards
Definitions of Canada, OG
“…Endowed with vast and rugged wilderness landscapes, Canada is often framed as an
ethical and multicultural democracy whose bountiful resources are responsibly extracted
for the welfare of the nation…”
!!!Resource extraction is the cornerstone esp of canada!!
Reading tries to debunk the economic benefits, but also tries to get to the idea of canada as an energy nation is about identity
Canada and Climate Change
We are major pollutors mainly because we are heavily reliant on fossil fuels AND because we are major exporters in coal, oil and natural gas.
Result ==> we will have global warming growing 2x faster in terms of temperatures.
should mention GHG
Key Challenges Canada will face in terms of a changing climate
- freshwater risks
- terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems
- coastal life
- human health
- Inuit communities up north being able to preserve their ways of living
- human security (more moving around)
COP 29, STEVEN GUILLBERT
Canada is working at the international level to develop funds to help countries adapt to climate change.
Canada needs to BECOME a leader in addressing climate change.
there is significant tension at the provincial and federal levels (carbon tax)
we are on our way to meeting climate goals but there are challenges (carbon tax and provinces for example)
Canada’s energy hisotry…
- Shift from organic to mineral transformed country
Moving from organic, coal, electricity - Development blocks in industrial societies
- Coal was important for economy
- Canadians have (and had) a particularly high demand for energy
Since settlement, generally abundant sources → country was built on its natural resources
Distances required significant energy use for transportation
Canadian Pipelines
toooons, very expansive pipeliness around canada carrying liquids and gases (mainly oil and natural gas)
A significant political issue in 20th and 21st century - for indigenous, environmentalists, labour unions etc who oppose pipeline projects, it is generally an environmental issue, contaminating global water ways
TRANSCANADA
controversial pipeline. an expansion that was super protested but continued this year.
some indig groups support and some against, problem is moving forward in an equitable way!!!!
Canadian Oil and Gas
discovery of fossil fules began in Enniskillen Township, Ontario in the 1850s
In Alberta, gas discovered in Medicine Hat in 1904
Renewed activity with the discovery of the Leduc oil field in 1947
most of todays petroleum deposits are in Alberta
The North… :(
they are very vulnerable to the repercussions of climate change. estimate they experice 3x the rate compared elsewhere. many schoalrs argue Canada’s goals of protecting the North and exploiting its resources are incompatible.
lots of adverse challenges when it come sto people, wildlife and land…
Way’s Canada is trying to move the needle….
pricing of carbon, Canada has a minimum price of carbon
Canada is investing in new clean energy tech asw (BATTERIES, EVs, DERs!)
Have seen resistance though….
- some talk about progress to justify large resource extraction
- common thought across Canadians: we rely on idea of Canada as caring, altruistic in many ways, canada can be the one to extract resources in responsible way but in reality, canada not living up to these IDEALS
technological nationalism
rhetoric of technological nationalism
- ascribes to technology the capacity to create a nation
EX: RAILWAY! UNITE PEOPLE! Became important for SETTLERS to dispossess indigenous lands.
railways in canada
an example of technological nationalism!!!!
became a symbol of canadian identity (movement to the west)
Ascribes to technology the capacity to create a nation
Examples: railway . was regarded as the project set to UNITE. Became esp important for settlers to dispossess on indigenous lands. This was a symbol of canadian identity (movement to the west). Rhetoric used
