Canada and Climate Change

A

We are major pollutors mainly because we are heavily reliant on fossil fuels AND because we are major exporters in coal, oil and natural gas.

Result ==> we will have global warming growing 2x faster in terms of temperatures.

they are very vulnerable to the repercussions of climate change. estimate they experice 3x the rate compared elsewhere. many schoalrs argue Canada’s goals of protecting the North and exploiting its resources are incompatible.

Q

Way’s Canada is trying to move the needle….

A

pricing of carbon, Canada has a minimum price of carbon

Canada is investing in new clean energy tech asw (BATTERIES, EVs, DERs!)

Have seen resistance though….
- some talk about progress to justify large resource extraction
- common thought across Canadians: we rely on idea of Canada as caring, altruistic in many ways, canada can be the one to extract resources in responsible way but in reality, canada not living up to these IDEALS
