How did the Europeans describe the islanders way of life?
As primitive, despite the islanders being satisfied with their lives.
What happened when the first Europeans (Germans) arrived on the island?
Native people thought it was their dead ancestors returning, now this is said about tourists.
How do the islanders feel about tourists?
They are confused as to why they come, angry because they don’t buy their things despite having money, believe tourists come to see if they are civilized.
What is the spirit house?
Believe it came out of the ocean. Germans, English, and Australians destroyed ancient symbols in spirit house (missionaries), so nothing sacred remains. Also used as a way to make money, tourists are charged to go inside and take pics.
What caused people to become interested in New Guinea?
Rockefellers disappearance in 1961
Why was cannibalism practiced?
For survival, symbolic, or as a custom.
Who pacified their area?
Sorensen. Now they live under church and gov rules.
What are the tourists goals in New Guinea?
To assimilate the primitive people. Belief that they need help.
How is cultural relativity shown in this film?
Shows that culture is experienced differently by everybody and you can’t judge someone else’s culture based off of your own.
