What is Candida infection?
A common infection caused by Candida albicans, a yeast or fungus.
What are the effects of a Candida infection? (3)
- Affects mucous membranes; most commonly in the mouth and vagina
- Makes one more vulnerable to HIV as it affects mucous membranes
- It can occur harmlessly in the body, often in the intestine. It is kept in check by the immune system and intestine bacteria.
A Candida infection is only harmful when a Candida overgrowth occurs, how does one occur? (4)
- Excessive taking of antibiotics can reduce the number of friendly bacteria in your intestine
- Suffering from immunodeficiency diseases
- Women under stress, lacking sleep, having a diet or being ill are at risk
- Warmth and moisture in the genitals and folds of skin
How is a Candida infection treated? (2)
- Oral thrush is usually treated with an antifungal mouthwash
- Vaginal yeast infections can be treated with topical antifungal medications
What does topical mean?
Applied to the surface of the body being treated.
What is Athlete’s foot?
A fungal infection affecting mainly the skin between the toes caused by a fungus called Tiena which grows in damp places
What does the fungus that causes Athlete’s foot feed on?
It feeds on keratin, a protein, found in skin cells.
How can Athlete’s foot be treated?
It can be treated by keeping the affected parts dry and applying an antifungal powder.
