How does Candidias occur?
When competing bacterial flora are eliminated, it allows yeast to overgrow
What microbiome causes candidias?
Mainly the yeast Candida albicans
Other Candida species (normal body flora found on the mouth, skin, vagina and intestines)
How would a patient with oral candidias present?
Raised, white plaques on the oral mucosa, tongue or gums
What is another name for oral candidias?
Oral thrush
Overtime how will thrush develop and spread?
The plaques become confluent and ulcerated and spread to the throat
When is thrush an indicator of AIDS?
When it spreads to the oesophagus
How would a patient with vaginal candidias present?
Itching and burning pain of the vulva and vagina, accompanied by a white discharge
The absence of which common vaginal organism typically causes vaginal thrush?
Lactobacillus
How would you treat oral and vaginal thrush?
Topically with nystatin or clotrimazole
