What is candida caused by ?
A
By the yeast Candida albicans and other Candida species which overgrow -
This occurs when bacterial flora are eliminated by antibacterial antibiotics allowing yeast to overgrow.

What are the symptoms of oral candidiasis?
A
- white plaques on the oral mucosa , tongue or gums
- the plaques become ulcerated and spread to throat
- most HIV positive individuals develop oral candidiasis
- the infection often spreads to the oesophagus - causing difficulties to swallow.

What are symptoms of vaginal candidiasis
A
- white discharge
- itching
- burning
- burning pain and redness of the vulva and vagina

What is oral and vaginal infections treated with typically ?
A
Nystatin is used to treat oral thrush and clotrimazole is used to treat vaginal thrush.
