Canal preparation Flashcards
What are the general principles in canal preparation?
- Removing canal contents
- Eliminating infection
- Creating shape
- Save the teeth
What are the cleaning and shaping objectives?
- Remove infected hard and soft tissue
- Give disinfecting solutions access to the apical canal space
- Create space for the delivery of medicaments and subsequent obturation
- Retain the integrity of radicular structures
Do Endo-Z burs cut on the end?
-No they are useful for the final canal preparation
What bur do you use for the outline form in endo?
-#330
How do you enter the dentin when doing a root canal?
-Long axis to the tooth/root
How do you refine access in the pulp chamber?
-Longer cutting bur/diamond that is safe ended
What is the first step to do when doing canal location?
-Create line-angle opening for each canal
What do you use to access each main canal?
-#15 hand file
How do you distinguish between a hedstrom 15 and a 15 k file?
-The hedstrom will have a round black circle on it and the k file will be square (These indicate the cross section of the shank)
How do you estimate the working length?
-Radiograph
Gently access the canal within 1-2 mm of what?
-Estimated Working Length
How do you gently access the canal?
-Watch winding-twiddling with a #10 or #15 to establish canal patency
T/F Access canal with a hand instrument
True
What is the last step of access preparation?
-Pre-flare
What do you use to do the pre-flare?
- Hedstrom files #15 and #20 with and endo handle
- Rotary orifice opener
- Establish straight line access thru coronal 1/3
- Irrigation
Why do you agitate the irrigation solution?
-To dissolve pulp tissue
What do you sometimes have to remove to get straight line access?
-Dentinal triangles
How is the coronal canal preparation with gates glidden drills do?
-Run a #4 first, then #3, and then #2 (This allows you to get better taper than going #2, #3 ,and then #4
How do you enlarge the mid root size?
70 which is a #2 Gates Glidden drill
What do you use a rotary NiTi orifice opener (BR0) for?
-Coronal canal preparation
How do you know where to terminate?
- Knowledge of apical anatomy
- Tactile sensation
- Radiographic interpretation
- Apex locators
- Apical bleeding
- Pts response
Where do you want to fill the root canal to?
-The minor apical diameter
