Q

What are some issues with the old food guide? 6

A

The juice was presented as an alternative to fruit (it ignored the sugar content).
It spoke in portion sizes: Nobody measured cups, grams, or mL.
Not very user-friendly
The guide was very vague and wasn’t helpful to people that needed specific guidelines.
Dose not deal with the multiple things people have to do, only what you should do.
Can be misinterpreted easily.

Q

Why did the new food group eliminate dairy? (Physical factors)

A

Physical factors:
Dairy products are linked to various health issues, including heart disease, cancer, and elevated mortality rates. The estrogen in dairy poses risks, and dairy consumption can hinder athletic performance by causing excess mucus production, constricting blood flow, and causing inflammation. These effects can impair breathing, reduce nutrient and oxygen delivery to cells, and slow recovery, potentially leading to injuries.

Q

Why did the new food group eliminate dairy? (Ecological factors)

A

Ecological factors:
Dairy production emits three times more greenhouse gases than plant-based alternatives like soy and oat milk. Vegan milk also uses significantly less water and land. Experts, including Harvard’s Dr. Walter Willett, argue that humans do not need animal milk for nutrition.
