Campylobacter and helicobacter Flashcards
Characteristics of campylobacter
level 2 curvy, wavy rods gram-negative microaerophilic (O2 and CO2) requires nutritious media so grow at elevated temps intestine, repor tract
helicobacter characteristics
level 2
corkscrew shape = flagella
microaerophilic
stomach and GIT of host
virulence of Campylobacter jejuni
flagella
outer membrane adhesion proteins
superoxide dismutase and catalase
cytolethal -distending toxin
C, fetus subsp veneralis
host: cattle can be silent to clinical presentation dz: infertility, early embryonic death acquired from outside entering into the vagina (sexual transmission) tx: natural resolution and vx
C. fetus subsp fetus
host: small ruminant, cattle, humans
dz: abortions in final 6 wks of pregnancy
- febrile, vaginal discharge
acquired through ingestion - travels to gall bladder to uterus
highly contagious
tx: antimicrobials, vx
C. jejuni subsp jejuni
host: humans, other animals, pigs
dz: gastroenteritis, enterocolitis (H)
infected by ingestion
very low infectious dose
tx: self-limiting
C. coli
host: pigs
dz: enterocolitis
C. upsalensis
host: dog
dz: eneteritis
helicobacter species
host: various
dz: gastritis
Guillain-Barre syndrome
rare sequelae (<1/1000 cases) following campylobacteriosis
- GBS is an acute demyelinating disease of the peripheral nerves
no correlation between infection severity and the likelihood of developing GBS
Campylobacter spp
take positive fecal cultures with a big grain of salt
- commonly isolated from healthy animals
the exception is young animals <6months with clinical disease
