Brachyspira and lawsonia Flashcards
characteristics of lawsonia
- obligate intracellular parasite
- level 2
- lives in enterocytes of hosts
characteristics of brachyspira
- gram negative
- level 2
- aerotolerant anaerobe
- squiggly rods
- des not usually create colonies, hard to grow
- varying hemolysis
- found in GIT
lawsonia intracelularis
host: pig, horse, hamster
dz: proliferative enteropathy
chronic occurs in post weaned pigs - subclinical
acute 4-12 months
- CS: hemorrhagic, back tarry feces
lesions occur in the distal ileum and proximal colon
- corrugated ridges
B.hyodysenteriae and B. hampsonii
host: pigs
dz: swine dysentry
- mild watery-mucohemorrhagic diarrhea
most common in older pigs
don’t really know how to control it
B. pilosicoli
host: pig
dz: spirochetal colitis, wet cement feces without blood
self-limiting
control:
- antimicrobials
- good management
Brachyspira spp.
host: avian
dz: GIT problems
- different levels of diarrhea
treponema spp.
host: cattle
dz: digital dermatitis
likely a polymicrobial infection
suggests management problems
tx: topical cleaning (mild)
topical antibiotics (severe)
- oxytetratcycline, lincomycin/spectinomycin
treatment of lawsonia
penicillins, bacitracin, aminoglycosides, virginiamycin, and ionophores are ineffective
use macrolides /pleuromutilins
treatment of brachysipra
macrolides ( lincomycin, tylosin, tylvalosin) and pleuromutilins
