Calorimetry Notes Flashcards
What is calorimetry?
The process of measuring how much heat is absorbed or released during a chemical reaction.
What is a calorimeter?
A device that is insulated from the surroundings so that essentially no heat can transfer in or out of the device.
When heat is transferred what happens?
It causes a temperature change.
What is the equation for transferring energy?
q=MC(triangle)t
What is the q?
the energy/heat
What is the m?
The mass.
What is c?
the specific heat (j/g*(degrees Celsius)
What is the triangle T?
the change in temperature- degrees celsius
How do you get triangle T?
Final temp. minus initial temp.
How can the specific heat of metal be measured?
Calorimetry.
How will heat flow when it comes to objects?
Heat will flow from the hot object to the cold object.
When energy is lost by the metal what happens with the water?
The water gains energy which is equal to the energy lost.
