What is a calories?
The unit energy is measured in food
Where should calories come from?
Carbohydrate has 4kcal / g
Protein has 4 kcal/g
Fat has 9 kcal /g
Get a maximum of 35% of your calories from fat
and 50% of your calories from carbohydrate. Get
at least 15% of your calories from protein.
What is Body Mass Index(BMI)?
A way of measuring if you are a healthy weight for
your height.
BMI = weight (kg) x height (m)2
How many calories should an adult female and
male have each day?
2000 kcal and 2500 kcal
How could you tell if someone was obese?
They would have a body mass index over 30 and a waist measurement of over 94cm for a male and 80cm for a female.
What is a healthy BMI?
A healthy BMI is 18.5 - 25
How many calories should a teenage girl and boy
have each day?
2850 kcal and 3450 kcal
What are the causes of obesity?
- Eating more food than you need
- lack of exercise
- over consumption of food high in fat and sugar
- low budget
- lack of cooking facilities or cooking knowledge
- genes
- depression.
What are side effects of obesity?
- Heart disease
- high blood pressure
- stroke
- early death
- cancer
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- problems conceiving
- pressure on joints and bones.
What is energy balance?
The balance between the number of calories you eat
and the number of calories you use in a day.
What is negative energy balance?
Where you eat less calories than you use and so you
loose weight.
