North Coast Counties.
Coastal Area North of San Francisco. Premium wine country. 1. Mendocino County. 2. Lake County. 3. Sonoma County. 4. Napa County. 5. Los Carneros.
Central Coast.
Two wine growing regions. 1. North Central Coast - Livermore Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey, Carmel Valley. — Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Viognier & Gewurztraminer. 2. South Central Coast
South Coast.
From LA South to the Mexican border. - Temecula Valley AVA (the largest designated wine region in the South Coast wine region) - Antelope Valley AVA - Leona Valley AVA. - San Pasqual Valley AVA - Ramona Valley AVA
Sierra Foothills
Amador County is the cenre of wine making. Zinfandel, Barbera, Sangiovese, Syrah and Viognier.
Central Valley.
Californias wine industry’s workhouse. Huge hot inland area. Produces 75% of California’s wines. Encompases Sacramento, Yolo, San Joaquin, Madera & Fresno Counties. Major source of bulk wine. Often source of wines labeled as “California”.
Mendocino County.
North Coast. Northernmost growing area of California. Foggy and cool. Pinot noir, Chardonnay &; Cabernet Sauvignon. Anderson Valley AVA is best known. Diverse terroir.
Lake County.
name from Clear Lake East of Mendocino. Cheap Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Also merlot and Chardonnay.
Sonoma County
More Pinot Noir than any other county. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot. Best known –Russian River AVA. –Alexander valley AVA. – Dry Creek AVA – Chalk Hill AVA – Knights Valley AVA.
Los Carneros
Los Carneros is an AVA. Includes parts of both Sonoma and Napa counties Chardonnay & Pinot noir Superb Sparkling wines.
Sonoma County
West of Napa Valley, Alexander Valley AVA, for Cabernet Sauvignon. Russian River Valley AVA,cool-climate, excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Dry Creek Valley AVA, old-vine Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Santa Barbara County
Cooling effect of fogs and winds. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah, Grenache.
Explain Appellation of Origin law in California
- If it says “California” on the label, 100 percent of the grapes used must be grown in California.
- For officially designated “AVA”s, at least 85 percent of the grapes must come from that region (for example Napa Valley).
- If the “vineyard is named, at least 95 percent of the grapes must be grown in that vineyard.
- The term “Estate Bottled” means that 100 percent of the grapes were grown on land that the winery owns or controls.
