Caliciviridae Flashcards
Vesicular exanthema of swine virus
& Feline Calicivirus
• Family & genus
Caliciviridae
• Vesivirus
Characteristics of Calicivirus
+ sense ssRNA virus
No envelope
What was the main transmission in the US?
Uncooked garbage
• was wrongly dx for FMD
• since this has been outlawed, it has not shown up again
• present sill in marine mammals
Pathogenesis of VESV
• uncooked garbage –> pig-to-pig transmission
What is changed with diff strains of Feline calicivirus?
Antigenicity & pathogenicity
Can calicivirus infect dogs?
Assoc’d w/ GI inflamm & vasicular genital dz
What dz in rabbits is assoc’d w/ calicivirus?
Rabbit hemorrhagic fever
Transmission of feline calicivirus
• Direct/indirect
• persists in Tonsil – carriers are common
• Higher prevalence in colony animals
- overcrowding, poor ventilation
• FIV potentiates shedding
• once infected, can be excreted for long period of time
How do you Dx a feline calicivirus?
What are the main differences in FHV vs Calicivirus?
Clinical signs / Throat swab
• Oral / nasal ulceration & Lamness
Clinical signs of feline calicivirus
Oral ulceration
• gingivitis, stomatitis
• start as vesicles –> rupture
Synovitis –> lameness
• macrophages w/ virus in synovial membrane
Focal alveolitis
• exudative pneumonia –> interstitial pneumonia
What is important for immunity in feline calicivirus
Most strains –> cross protection
Virus neutralizing Ab
Vaccines for Feline calicivirus
If one component is live, they all must be live
VS if one is killed, the other parts must be killed
inactivated
• Queens
• Immunocompromised
High mutation rate –> switch vx if it doesn’t look effective
