Calculus Flashcards
The set of all input numbers in a function?
Domain
What is a function?
A rule that takes certain numbers as inputs and assigns each one a definite output
The set of all output numbers in a function?
Range
Which is the independent and dependent variable?
Input is independent, output is dependent
How are < notated, and what do they mean?
[ and (, and they mean closed set versus open set
What does y=(f)t mean?
Y is a function of t.
Constant of proportionality?
If Y=kx, y is directly proportional to x. K is the constant of proportionality
Power function?
Q(x) is a “power function” of x if Q(x) is proportional to a constant power of x. If k is the constant of proportionality, and if p is the power, then Q(x)=k*x^p
W=k/r^2. W is inversely proportional to what?
R^2
What shape do y=x^n take?
U shape for even powers, and S shape for odd powers (for n>1)
Y=kx^n. What is the coefficient?
K
What do negative exponents represent?
The inverse of the positive exponent. X^-2=1/x^2
What do the graphs of y=x^-1 and y=x^-2 look like?
Very Blunt nose cones with the tips facing the origin. For x^-1 the curves are in the quadrants III and I of the Cartesian plane, and x^-2 they are in I and II
f’(x) refers to
Derivative of x
What is slope the same as?
Derivative of a curve, which is a tangent line at one point
