Calcium Flashcards
PTH mechanisms for Hypercalcemia?
increase release from bones, in Ca uptake in intestine, increase Ca reabsorption in kidneys/calcitonin is opposite
corrected calcium?
every decrease in 1 of albumin, increase or total calcium by .8
Hypercalcemia EKG findings?
shortened QT

when do bisphosphinates work for hypercalcemia?
start to work 24-48 hours
when to use steroids for hypercalcemia?
lymphoma, sarcoidosis, granuloma
how does hypomagnesium lead to hypocalcemia?
PTH resistance
mechanisms of malignancy related hypercalcemia?
PTHrp is MC, osteolysis from bony mets, ectopic PTH, calcitriol by lymphoma
EKG findings hypocalcemia
prolonged QT
how does hypocalcemia occur in blood transfusion?
chelation of calcium ions by citrate in blood
symptoms of hypocalcemia?
perioral numbness, twitching, tetany, carpopedal spasm
