Caesar 1.11 Flashcards
The Helvetii had already led their troops through the narrow passes and borders of the Sequani and had reached the borders of the Haedui and were ravaging their fields.
Because the Haedui were not able to defend themselves and their possessions from the Helvetii, they sent legates to Caesar to ask for help
(They said) that they merited from the Roman people every time such that their fields ought not be ravaged, their children ought not be abducted into servitude, and their towns ought not be destroyed nearly in view of our army.
At the same time, the Ambarri, close friends and kinsmen of the Haedui, made Caesar more certain that, with their fields having been ravaged, they couldn’t easily prohibit the force of enemies from the towns
Likewise, the Allobroges who had villages and possessions across the Rhone, retreat by flight towards Caesar and say to him that there was nothing remaining except the soil of their land
quibus rebus adductus Caesar non exspectandum sibi statuit; dum omnibus fortunis sociorum consumptis in Santonos Helvetii pervenirent
Caesar, having been led by which reasons, decided that it shouldn’t be waited by him, until the Helvetti arrive among the Santoni with all of the fortunes of the allies having been consumed.
