Caesar 1.1.1-1.4 Flashcards
Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres, quarum unam inoclunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur.
Gaul is divided into three parts, the first of which the Belgae inhabit, the second the Aquitani inhabit, and the third those we call Gauls in our language, who are called Celts in their own language, inhabit.
hi omnes lingua, institutis, legibus inter se differeunt.
These all differ between themselves in language, institution, and laws.
Gallos ab Aquitanis Garunna flumen, a Belgis Matrona et Sequana dividit
The Garunna river divides the Gauls from the Aquitani, the Matrona and Sequana river divide the Gauls from the Belgae
horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae
The Belgae are the strongest of all of them
Because they are furthest absent from the culture and humanity of the province and merchants rarely travel to them, and import things which pertain to effeminating minds, and they are closest to the Germans, who live across the Rhine, with whom they are continuously waging war.
qua de causa Helvetii quoque reliquos Gallos virtute praecedunt, quod fere cotidianis proeliis cum Germanis contendunt, cum aut suis finidbus eos prohibent aut ipsi in eorum finibus bellum gerunt.
For this reason the Helvetii also exceed the rest of the Gauls in virtue, because they are fighting in battles with the Germans nearly everday, when they either prohibit the Germans from their borders or wage war on the borders of the Germans.
